July 11, 1999   Hisui Nagare by Suzuki Suzu

“Bye, mom.”

“Goodbye, Nagare-san. Please be back by dinner.”

These mundane words would be his last conversation with his mother.

Hisui Nagare was a weird child. It wasn’t like he thought of himself as weird, but it seemed like that was how his surroundings perceived him. Perhaps that was because he was always emotionless and when he talked he always used polite speech.

The reason for that were his parents.

His parents used polite speech when talking with each other and with their son Nagare. They also didn’t show emotions often.

One time when a friend of the father had visited them and gotten drunk, he had called them “a family like robots”, and that was probably the right impression people had of the Hisui family.

The father and mother were both weird, and that’s why Nagare had become weird too.

But that didn’t mean that there was no love in their family. The father and mother were close, and they both loved Nagare. Nagare received their love and while being odd, he was brought up as an intelligent child. The Hisui household was a happy one.

That day had been a Sunday.

Nagare had gone to one of his few friends’ house to play. He had invited Nagare to play a newly released game with everybody at somebody’s place.

“Excuse the intrusion.”

Nagare called out in the floor and when he was turning to go upstairs, he heard sounds coming from the TV in the living room.

“An order for evacuation has been issued in xxx. Citizens of that area please follow the orders of your community staff members and calmly evacuate…”

Nagare titled his head while climbing up the stairs.

The name of the place they had mentioned on TV was the name of a city not so far away from where Nagare lived. Once he had gone to a seawater bath there with his parents. And now they said an evacuation order had been issued there. Just what was happening there?

However, as soon as Nagare opened the door to his friend’s room, he had already forgotten this question. He sat down with his friends who were already there and started playing. He was still just a child.

That he noticed ‘that’ was probably because of the curiosity of a child.

“I wonder what that is?”

All his friends turned to the spot he was pointing at. Then all of them except for Nagare opened their eyes wide.

There were swords floating in the sky.

A red and a blue sword were floating in the far away, overcast sky. He wouldn’t know until much later that that was the centre of the city where the evacuation had been issued.

They all abandoned their game and ran outside to look at 'that’.

They went to a close-by apartment and climbed up to its rooftop. It seemed like other people had also noticed 'that’ as there were several families on the roof, staring curiously at 'that’. One of them was a woman holding a baby to her chest.

“I wonder what that is. Maybe they’re filming a movie?”

“Isn’t that red one kinda crumbling?”

While Nagare heard the voices around him he felt his own fingers coil around the fence.

“It will fall.”

It took him a moment to realize that those were his own words. His friends looked at him in surprise. Surprised himself, Nagare looked back at them.

“Ah, he’s right!” Somebody yelled and Nagare’s eyes were drawn back to 'that’.

The ragged red sword was about to fall slowly. It fell to the ground, cutting through the air and scattering its broken pieces.

One of his friends looked at Hisui and laughed, saying: “Let’s go to where it’s falling later! We might be able to pick up a  few piec-”

He wasn’t able to speak the end of his sentence.

First there was light.

An overwhelming light that seemed to dye his whole vision white.

After that came the impact. It effortlessly bend the fence and send everybody on the rooftop flying.

While he was flying in the air, Nagare saw various things.

The neck of the friend who had smiled at him was bend by 180 degree through the impact. His smile was still plastered on his face while blood dripped down the corners of his mouth.

Another friend’s whole body was pierced by the crushed fence.

The mother who had been on the roof was pressing her baby to her chest with all her might while being thrown in the air.

All of them were smashed against the ground and crushed like trash. They all lost their lives.

Only one of them, only Nagare – even when he fell with his eyes facing the ground, and his heart got pierced, he was still alive. While looking at the scenery of countless deaths and destruction, he quietly thought in the corner of his mind.

…I wonder what today’s dinner would have been.

July 11, 1999.

The sword of Damocles of the Red King Kagutsu Genji had fallen as a result of his loss of control, and a part of the southern Kanto area had been removed from this world.

The presumed number of deaths was seven hundred. Without a doubt this was the worst incident ever in human history.

That day Hisui Nagare awoke as the Green King.

He lost everything, and obtained a tremendous power.

But even when he had become a King he was never able to know what dinner that day would have been.
